Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006

On December 20, 2006, President Bush signed the Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006. The Act made a number of changes to the Medicare program, including a significant change in the enrollment periods for Medicare Advantage Plans.

Section 206 of the Act created a “Limited Continuous Open Enrollment Period” (LCOEP). During the LCOEP, which lasts from March 31 through November 15 (possibly November 30), individuals who are enrolled in Original Medicare, with or without a stand alone Prescription Drug Plan, may purchase a Medicare Advantage Plan without prescription drug coverage.
